 Welcome to Morocco! 🇲🇦

Our journey begins in Casablanca (or simply "Casa," as the locals call it). Think of this city as the grand foyer to the Moroccan fairy tale we’re about to live. It’s vibrant, modern, and the perfect place to find our feet.

Once we’ve dropped our bags at our perfectly situated home base, we’re hitting the ground running.

We’ll start with the heavy hitters: the breathtaking Hassan II Mosque. It’s one of the largest in the world, boasting a 210-meter minaret that dominates the skyline. Afterward, we’ll step back in time at Rick’s Café—a stunning, real-life recreation of the bar from the 1942 Hollywood classic, Casablanca.

But we aren’t just here for the postcards. We’re going to feel the city. Whether we’re hopping in a taxi, using public transit, or wandering on foot, we’ll immerse ourselves in Casa’s unique energy.

It’s a fascinating blend: you’ll see the lingering elegance of French colonial architecture, the deep roots of Muslim culture, and a bold, youthful spirit that’s rushing toward the future. It’s the old world meeting the new, and it’s the perfect start to our 14-day adventure.

TOUR 1. Moroccan Cooking Class

Hopefully, you’ve slept off the jet lag, because today we’re hitting our stride!

We’re leaving the coast behind and heading for the "Red City." To get there, we’ll be boarding a modern Moroccan marvel: the high-speed train to Marrakech. It offers some of the most picturesque landscapes in the country, and because I want us to travel in style, we’re doing this journey in First Class. Lean back, enjoy the views, and watch the scenery shift from urban bustle to desert gold.

Once we’ve checked into our centrally located Marrakech apartment, we’re diving straight into a hands-on Cooking Class.

I have a specific reason for placing this on Day 2: Moroccan cuisine is legendary, but it’s also incredibly bold. To help your palate (and your stomach!) adjust, we’re using this class as our "Culinary Orientation."

Instead of just guessing at a menu, you’ll learn the secrets of the spices directly from a local expert. It’s the perfect bridge to the local culture, giving you the "insider knowledge" on what to eat and how it’s prepared. Pro tip: This is the best time to ask all your burning questions!

After a busy day of travel and new flavors, we’ll take it easy tonight. We have two incredible nights in this city, so let’s recharge our batteries. You’ll need your strength for the magic we have planned for tomorrow.

Marrakech

Rise and shine! Today, we’re immersing ourselves in the heartbeat of the "Red City." Marrakech earned its nickname from the stunning terracotta hues of its buildings, but the real magic is found in its energy. We’ll spend the morning navigating the vibrant, maze-like Medina and the bustling Jemaa el-Fnaa square.

I have a curated "must-see" list of cultural sites ready for us, but I know the best travel moments often happen in the gaps. If you feel like getting lost in the souks to hunt for the perfect leather bag or hand-woven rug, go for it! This city is a shopper’s paradise. Personally? I’ll be heading toward the center of the action to find the best vantage point for the legendary snake charmers.

Once our feet are tired from the cobblestones, a true Moroccan "WOW" moment awaits: a Traditional Hammam. This isn't just a bath; it’s a ritual. We’re talking a full-body exfoliation with a Kessa glove and traditional black soap infused with relaxing herbs, followed by a purifying Ghassoul clay wrap.

If you want to reach a state of total bliss, I highly recommend adding the Organic Argan Oil Massage. There’s nothing quite like a full-body treatment using premium, liquid-gold Moroccan argan oil to restore your energy.

By the time we’re done, you’ll feel like royalty, ready for the next leg of our journey.

air baloon

We’re starting today before the sun even thinks about rising, but trust me—it’s worth every lost minute of sleep. We’re heading out to see the Marrakech countryside from a completely different perspective: a Hot Air Balloon.

There is something truly magical about floating silently above the landscape as the first rays of light hit the Atlas Mountains. We’ll join a group of fellow "sky-high" adventurers to toast the sunrise from the clouds. If you’re looking for a "WOW" moment to fill your camera roll, this is definitely the one.

Once we’re back on solid ground, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy the vibrant energy of Marrakech one last time. Maybe there’s a café you missed or a specific corner of the Medina you want to revisit?

While you’re out exploring, I’ll be handling the "boring" (but vital!) logistics. I’ll be finalizing our arrangements and picking up our rental car. Why? Because tomorrow, the real adventure begins as we leave the city behind and hit the open road. Get some good rest tonight—we’re officially starting our Moroccan road trip in the morning!

2 hr 52 min (177 km)

tree goats

Wake up and get those bags ready! Today, we leave the red walls of Marrakech behind and head toward the Atlantic. If you need a nap in the car, I won’t judge—but don't sleep too soundly, or you might miss one of Morocco's most surreal sights: the climbing goats! Yes, keep your eyes peeled for goats balanced on the branches of Argan trees. It’s a quirky, "only-in-Morocco" moment you have to see to believe.

Our first major stop is Essaouira, the "Wind City of Africa." This isn't just a coastal town; it’s a bohemian dream.

We’ll explore the UNESCO-listed Medina, famous for its striking white-and-blue architecture. For the Game of Thrones fans, we’ll walk the Sqala de la Ville—the historic sea walls that served as a filming location for the show. And obviously, we can’t visit a fishing port this famous and not try the seafood. We’re going to dive into the freshest sardines and local catches right by the water.

3 hr min (176 km)

TAGHAZOUT

As we continue south, the vibe shifts from historic to "salt-life." We’re stopping in Taghazout, the undisputed Surf Capital of Morocco. Even if you aren't catching a wave at the legendary Anchor Point, you’ll love the laid-back, digital-nomad energy here. We’ll take a moment to appreciate the traditional blue fishing boats and the village's vibrant fish stalls.

After a day of salt air and scenic drives, we’ll land in Agadir. It’s been a long day of exploration, so we’ll find a perfect spot for a relaxed dinner before crashing at our accommodation.

I’ve built some flexibility into today. If we’re enjoying the vibe in one spot a little too much, we can always save some of our Agadir exploration for tomorrow morning!

2 hr 42 min (230 km)

AGAFAY DESERT

Today, we’re taking it slow. We’ll start with a relaxed breakfast overlooking the Atlantic, catching any sights we missed yesterday in Taghazout or the modern city of Agadir. Take a deep breath of that salty air—we’re about to trade the blue of the ocean for the gold and ochre of the High Atlas foothills.

Our destination today is Agafay. While many people think "desert" means sand dunes, Agafay offers something perhaps even more striking: a "Stone Desert." Imagine a barren, lunar-like terrain of white and brown undulating hills that look like they belong on another planet.

It’s a place of deep tranquility and raw beauty, offering a spectacular alternative to the distant Sahara.

We aren't just visiting; we’re staying. We’ll be settling into a desert oasis right in the heart of this rocky wilderness. There are two things you absolutely cannot miss here:

  1.  The Golden Hour: Watching the sunset turn the desert floor into liquid gold with the Atlas Mountains as a backdrop.
  2. The Night Sky: With almost zero light pollution, Agafay is one of the best places on Earth for stargazing.

The night is yours to shape. If you’re feeling the energy of the desert and we're lucky, we can enjoy a traditional dance show around the campfire. If you’re craving peace, it’s the perfect time for some self-reflection, yoga or meditation under a canopy of a million stars. Let’s stay the night and see if the legends of Agafay are true.

4 hr 24 min (238 km)

Ait benhaddou

I hope you’re feeling adventurous because today we’re tackling one of the most legendary drives in Africa! We’re heading for the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, the highest major mountain pass in North Africa. Reaching an elevation of 2,260 meters (7,415 ft), this route was built by the French in 1936 along ancient caravan trails.

Buckle up for dramatic hairpin turns and sweeping panoramic views as we wind through the rugged High Atlas Mountains. This pass is the gateway that connects the plains of Marrakech to the edge of the Sahara.

Once we cross the pass, the landscape shifts into the cinematic world of the South - The "Hollywood of Africa". We’ll spend our afternoon exploring two world-famous locations:

  • Aït Benhaddou: A UNESCO World Heritage site and a breathtaking example of ancient earthen clay architecture. You’ll recognize this 17th-century fortified village from Gladiator, The Mummy, and as the city of Yunkai in Game of Thrones. Walking through these "ksars" (fortified houses) feels like stepping back 400 years in time.
  • Ouarzazate: Known as the "Gateway to the Sahara," this city is home to Atlas Studios. We’ll explore the dramatic desert landscapes that provided the backdrop for Lawrence of Arabia and Kingdom of Heaven.

After soaking in the cinematic history and enjoying dinner in town, we’ll drive just a little further. I’ve planned this "extra mile" tonight to eat up some of tomorrow’s distance, ensuring our next day remains relaxed and enjoyable.

It’s been a long, epic day of mountain peaks and movie sets. You’ve earned a good night’s sleep!

6 hr 13 min (399 km)

DADÈS GORGES

Welcome to another spectacular day! Today, we trade the movie sets for nature’s own masterpieces as we head deep into Morocco’s famous canyons and valleys.

Our primary target is the Dadès Gorges. This area is legendary for its dramatic, narrow canyons and striking red rock formations. Keep your eyes peeled for the "Monkey Fingers"—unique sandstone cliffs eroded over centuries into strange, hand-like shapes. We’ll also conquer the gorge’s most famous feature: a spectacular, winding road with hairpin turns that offer the ultimate bird’s-eye view of the valley below.

As we navigate between the High Atlas and the Jbel Saghro ranges, we enter a region known as the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs." The scenery here is a beautiful contradiction: rugged, dry mountains overlooking lush, green, palm-lined river valleys.

We’ll drive through Traditional Berber Villages, where life still moves at an ancient pace, and head straight to the Valley of Roses. This fragrant region is the heart of Morocco’s rose water production. Depending on the season, the air here is incredibly sweet, and we’ll have the chance to see how this "liquid gold" is distilled.

6 hr 13 min (399 km)

Merzouga Dunes

Once we’ve stocked up on aromatic souvenirs from the Valley of Roses, we’re heading straight for the horizon. Our destination is the legendary Erg Chebbi, home to Morocco’s most iconic, massive orange-hued dunes—some towering over 150 meters high.

This is the moment you’ve been waiting for. We’ll leave our car behind and meet our desert guides to begin a traditional "caravan-style" camel trek. As we ride deeper into the golden sea of sand, you’ll watch the dunes shift in color from pale gold to deep ochre.

Our guide planned a very specific stop for us: we’ll climb to the crest of a towering dune just in time to witness a Sahara sunset. Watching the sun dip below the infinite horizon is an experience that stays with you forever.

Forget everything you know about camping. We’ll arrive at our luxury desert camp, where a refreshing welcome drink awaits. You’ll settle into a private, beautifully appointed tent featuring comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, and all the modern amenities you’d expect from a high-end retreat.

As night falls, we’ll enjoy a traditional Moroccan feast under the vast desert sky. Afterward, we’ll gather around the campfire for the hypnotic rhythm of Berber drums and music.

This is my favorite part of the trip. While we sit under a blanket of countless stars, I’ll share some of my favorite "insider" facts and funny stories about life in the desert. It’s the perfect end to a truly unforgettable day.

4 hr 4 min (263 km)

apple

We’ll start the day before dawn to catch the sunrise over the Algerian border. Seeing the desert ignite with the first morning light is a moment that never gets old. After a final breakfast at our camp, we’ll make our way back to Merzouga—whether you want one last camel ride or prefer to hop in the back of a 4x4 for a faster exit, the choice is yours!

Once reunited with our car, we’re heading north. We’ll be taking the historic Route 13, crossing the High Atlas via the famous Tunnel du Légionnaire. Built in the 1930s, this passage marks a dramatic shift in the landscape.

Welcome to the Ziz Canyon (Gorges du Ziz). Prepare for a breathtaking contrast: towering Jurassic limestone cliffs standing guard over the lush, emerald-green palm groves of the Ziz Valley. It’s the perfect place to pull over, stretch our legs, and snap some incredible photos of the vast "palmeraies" below.

Our destination tonight is Midelt, perched in the high plains between the High and Middle Atlas ranges. Known as the "Apple Capital of Morocco," Midelt offers a refreshing, cooler climate and a unique look into Berber mountain culture.

This region is a haven for geology lovers. Nearby Mibladen is famous for its mineral-rich mines, particularly lead and vanadinite. Keep an eye out for local vendors—they often sell unique, colorful mineral specimens that make for a truly one-of-a-kind souvenir.

After the heat of the desert, we’ll enjoy the crisp mountain air of Midelt. We’ll settle in here for the night, recharging for the final leg of our Moroccan odyssey.

2 hr 11 min (136 km)

Ifrane

After breakfast, we leave the "Apple City" behind and head into the Middle Atlas. Get ready for a bit of a surprise—our first stop is Ifrane, a town so tidy and uniquely designed that it’s known as the "Switzerland of Morocco." Developed by the French in the 1930s to resemble an Alpine village, it features red-tiled roofs, flower-lined streets, and a climate that feels more like the Pyrenees than North Africa. It is consistently ranked as one of the cleanest and safest towns in the country. We’ll stop for a photo with the iconic Stone Lion Statue in the city center before moving into the wilder side of the region.

Just outside the town lies the Ifrane National Park, home to a vast, ancient cedar forest. We’ll take a moment to breathe in the fresh mountain air and feel the energy of the woods. Keep your cameras ready—this is the home of the endangered Barbary macaques. These rare monkeys are a highlight of the Middle Atlas, and watching them move through the trees is a "WOW" moment for any nature lover.

1 hr 14 min (64.4 km)

Fes

Our journey continues to Fes, the cultural and spiritual soul of Morocco. Fes is home to Fes el-Bali, a UNESCO-listed medieval masterpiece and the world’s largest car-free urban space. Navigating this city is like stepping into a living history book—a true "Medieval Maze" where every turn reveals a new secret.

Fes is the absolute best place to find the finest craftsmanship and finally experience a traditional Riad. After we leave our car safely in the parking lot, we’ll head to our centrally located, absolutely stunning Riad. These traditional courtyard houses are the hidden gems of the city, offering peace and luxury right in the heart of the bustle. Once we’ve dropped our bags, we’ll set out on foot to explore.

  • The Chouara Tannery: A sensory explosion where leather is still dyed in ancient stone vats.
  • The University of al-Qarawiyyin: Founded in the 9th century, it is the oldest continuously functioning university in the world.
  • The Souks: This is your prime opportunity to find world-class pottery, intricate brass work, and high-quality leather goods.

After a day of mountain air and ancient history, we’ll settle in for a well-deserved dinner. You simply cannot visit Fes without trying its most famous culinary icon: Pastilla. This unique, sophisticated sweet and savory pastry (traditionally made with pigeon or chicken) is the ultimate pride of Fassi cuisine.

We’ll spend two nights here, letting the distant calls to prayer and the hum of history lull us to sleep in our beautiful Riad.

3 hr 31 min (169 km)

VOLUBILIS

After a hearty breakfast in our riad, we’ll head toward the most sacred town in Morocco: Moulay Idriss Zerhoun.

Perched dramatically across two hills, this town is the burial place of Idris I, the founder of Morocco’s first Islamic dynasty. For centuries, it was closed to non-Muslims, and even today, it remains one of the most authentic, untouched places in the country. To many locals, multiple pilgrimages here are considered equivalent to a Hajj to Mecca. We’ll take in the traditional charm and deep spiritual energy of this holy site before moving from Islamic history to the era of the Caesars.

Just a short drive away lies the Archaeological Site of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most significant Roman ruin in North Africa, so-called Rome’s African Frontier.

Founded in the 3rd century B.C., this was once a bustling outpost on the very edge of the Roman Empire. I’ve left this afternoon open for you to explore at your own pace. You’ll see:

  • The Mosaics: Incredibly preserved 2nd and 3rd-century floor mosaics that still sit in their original locations.
  • The Architecture: The massive Triumphal Arch and the Basilica that dominate the skyline.
  • The Fusion: A unique look at how Roman and indigenous Berber cultures blended together over two thousand years ago.

We have the freedom to roam these ancient streets until the sun begins to set. Watching the light hit the Roman columns against the backdrop of the Moroccan countryside is a "WOW" moment you won't want to rush.

3 hr 47 min (193 km)

CHEFCHAOUEN

We’ll savor one last beautiful breakfast in the courtyard of our cozy Riad. It’s the perfect moment to reflect on the ancient city before we leave the maze behind and head into the cooler air of the Rif Mountains.

If you’ve ever seen a Moroccan postcard, you’ll immediately recognize our destination. We are heading to the world-famous "Blue City," Chefchaouen. Founded in 1471, this town feels like a living dream. It is internationally renowned as the "Blue Pearl" for its striking blue-washed buildings, hidden winding alleys, and ornate doors. Here, Andalusian architecture meets a relaxed, mystical, and almost "other-worldly" vibe.

We’ll have plenty of time to get lost in these famous azure streets. As we wander, keep an eye out for the local specialties that make this region unique:

  • The Craft: Look for the heavy woolen garments and hand-woven blankets that the mountain artisans are famous for.
  • The Flavor: The real star here is Jben—a delicious, fresh local goat cheese that is an absolute must-try.

Once the constant climbing up and down the blue stairs has finally exhausted us, we’ll head back to the car. We’ll make one final stretch for the day, driving toward the coast to settle in for the night near the legendary Strait of Gibraltar.

2 hr 5 min (112 km)

TANGIER

The "Bride of the North"—Tangier is legendary for its strategic position as the gateway between Africa and Europe. It’s a bohemian hub with a storied past, having served as a haven for famous artists and writers like Matisse and Paul Bowles.

We’ll dive into a unique blend of African and European influences as we explore:

  • Cape Spartel: A breathtaking spot where the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea meets the vast green Atlantic Ocean.
  • The Caves of Hercules: A natural marvel steeped in Greek mythology with an opening to the sea that perfectly resembles the shape of Africa.
  • The Phoenician Tombs: Ancient stone-carved graves perched on a cliffside, offering a silent window into the city's ancient history.

We can’t visit Tangier without stopping at Café Hafa. This famous cliffside café has been serving mint tea since 1921. It’s the perfect place to sit back and enjoy the best views of the coast and the Strait of Gibraltar.

Because we are at the coast, we’re going to indulge in Tangier’s famous seafood. We’ll look for the best grilled fish, fresh shrimp, and traditional coastal tagines.

We’re staying here for the night, which gives us a relaxed pace. Whatever we don't finish today, we’ll complete tomorrow. For now, enjoy the sea breeze and have a restful sleep!

3 hr 16 min (261 km)

RABAT

After several days on the road, there’s a wonderful sense of "pleasant exhaustion" and fulfillment in the air. We’ve seen so much, but I’ve saved one last elegant stop for our journey.

Whenever you’re ready, we’ll jump back on board and head to Rabat. As Morocco’s coastal capital, Rabat is a breath of fresh air. It’s a city where ancient history meets modern, polished charm.

We’ll spend our time exploring:

  • The Kasbah of the Udayas: A stunning, white-washed fortress with winding streets and vibrant Andalusian gardens overlooking the Atlantic.
  • The Hassan Tower & Mausoleum: We’ll visit the iconic 12th-century minaret and the ornate Mausoleum of Mohammed V, a masterpiece of modern Alouite dynasty architecture.
  • Chellah: A mystical medieval fortified necropolis that feels like a world of its own.

We’re staying in the heart of the city tonight. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a final coastal dinner and reflect on the 2,500+ kilometers we’ve traveled together. We’ve crossed mountains, deserts, and oceans—tonight, we enjoy the quiet elegance of the capital.

1 hr 25 min (92.7 km)

flight

Rise and shine! We’ll start the morning by catching any of Rabat’s hidden gems that we didn't have time for yesterday. I always build in this "spare time"—it’s the secret to a stress-free trip. Whether it’s one last walk through the Andalusian gardens or a final look at the Atlantic from the Kasbah walls, we’re in no rush.

Once we’ve said our goodbyes to the capital, we’ll head back toward where it all began: Casablanca. This is our final day on the road, and it’s a short, beautiful coastal drive. Lean back, enjoy the sea breeze, and take in the views of the Atlantic one last time.

You’ve officially conquered the Moroccan loop! Our Moroccan adventure has officially come to a close, and it’s time to say our goodbyes. We’ll hop into our trusty rental car one last time for the drive to the airport, where we'll return our "home on wheels" to the company.

The Emotional Finish: Saying goodbye to Morocco is hard, but saying goodbye to each other is even harder. After 15 days of shared sunrises, dusty roads, mountain passes, and laughter over tagines, this is always an emotional moment.

We might be leaving the "Red City" and the "Blue Pearl" behind, but we’re taking the stories, the "WOW" moments, and these friendships home with us.

Safe travels, and until the next adventure!
